A couple of years ago I wrote my wife Shelly a song as a surprise for our 25th anniversary. I made a simple video and had some CDs printed to give away to family and friends. Everything went as planned and I was able to spring the surprise on her with a beautiful Maui sunset as the backdrop. It was a wonderful moment that will be framed in our memories for the rest of our lives. Little did we know a few months later life would take a sudden turn.
Shelly, who had always been in perfect health, was diagnosed with an infection on one of her heart valves. The infection destroyed her valve and it was going to require open heart surgery to replace it. Staring down the possibility of losing my lady, and our son Cameron losing his mother, was absolutely the darkest period of my life. After we learned she had made it through surgery the darkness was quickly replaced with thankfulness and overwhelming joy. After three weeks in the hospital and months of rehabilitation, so happy to say that Shelly is living a perfectly normal life and all is well. Thank you God.
Since then, a lot has happened with her song. There's been a grassroots spreading of Flower In a Field. To date the video has had over 71,000 views, it was discussed and played on KLOVE and Shelly and I were interviewed on the Oprah Radio Network. I have received literally hundreds of emails and messages from all over the world. People have used the song at weddings, vow renewal ceremonies and to help celebrate their own anniversaries. Too, too cool.
It still amazes me how a song and a simple video I did for Shelly has continued to touch people. Wanting to give back, 100% of the iTunes sales are donated to organizations that focus on the hungry, homeless and others in need. Thanks to all of you that have shared and continue to share Flower In a Field.
